Visiting the Walk of Fame for Free
Why there is nothing to pay
The Walk of Fame is part of the street, not an attraction with a front door. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce administers it on behalf of the City of Los Angeles, and the Hollywood Historic Trust helps maintain the stars. The cost of each new star is met by a sponsorship fee paid when an honoree is selected, which the official FAQ at walkoffame.com says covers the creation and installation of the star as well as maintenance of the Walk. Visitors are not charged.
It is a public city sidewalk with no gates or opening hours of its own; the shops, theatres and attractions along it keep their own hours. The stars sit on both sides of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street and face both directions, "so that people walking either direction can see the stars easily", in the words of the official site.
What is free along the boulevard
Beyond the stars themselves, several things on or next to the Walk cost nothing to look at:
- The official Walk of Fame Directory and interactive Star Map, which give each honoree’s category, street address and ceremony date.
- The four Apollo 11 moon monuments, one on each corner of Hollywood and Vine.
- Muhammad Ali’s star, mounted on a wall at Ovation Hollywood (6801 Hollywood Blvd) rather than set in the pavement.
- The forecourt of the TCL Chinese Theatre opens onto the sidewalk, but this guide has not confirmed its access terms; the theatre’s own site has current access and tour details.
- Hollywood Sign views from Ovation Hollywood’s viewing areas, "especially the 4th level bridge", according to Discover Los Angeles.
A little further away, Griffith Observatory has free admission and is closed on Mondays, according to griffithobservatory.org. It is not on the Walk.
What costs money nearby

Costumed street performers work the sidewalk, especially near the Chinese Theatre, and may ask for a tip for a photo. Free star ceremonies
Star ceremonies on the Walk are free too. The official FAQ states: "Walk of Fame ceremonies are open and free to the public. There is a public viewing area set up for all to enjoy, subject to City restrictions." Seeing it without a tour
A guide is optional. The route is a straight line along one boulevard with a short spur on Vine Street, and the official directory shows where any chosen name is. The self-guided walk lays out the stops from Gower Street to La Brea Avenue with their addresses. A guided tour adds stories rather than access: the walking tour’s listing, for example, mentions the story behind the "blank star" and a Hearst–Chaplin murder-mystery story.
Before posing with a costumed performer, agree on any tip first. Keeping valuables close is ordinary city advice on a busy commercial street like Hollywood Boulevard.
